As the use of cellular phones
continues to grow, apparently so does the need for additional cell towers.
A similar survey question was presented during November of 2003, where 114
responses were received, of which 55% were opposed to additional towers.
However, this latest survey reflects a growing interest in the topic with
far more concerned about the negative impact of additional cell towers.

Recently a private day camp
opened a facility on Wantagh Park property. While some believe
the camp is justified since it offers a service to the community and
provides additional revenue for Nassau County, it appears that a strong
majority are opposed to the use of public land for private enterprise.

The County
Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums recently issued a request for
proposals to build a golf facility on the south side of Cedar Creek Park.
While many welcome this facility, it is clear that there are environmental
concerns. Perhaps, if our community were assured that the golf course were
to be built and maintained in an environmentally friendly manner, more
would welcome this recreational addition. For more information,

power windmills be built off the coast of Jones Beach? |

17% Yes, Long Island needs the power
33% Yes, but only if it yields a rate reduction
45% No, the problems do not justify their use
5% Undecided
(115 responses received) |
To supplement Long Island's
energy needs, the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) is considering plans
to erect a series of windmills in the waters off the coast of Jones Beach.
Power generated by these windmills would be carried via underwater cables,
to the existing power distribution grid on land. Supporters hail wind
power as a clean and renewable alternative to fossil fuels, while
opponents site feasibility and aesthetic concerns. Perhaps as more
information on this technology becomes available, our community will be
less divided. For more information, please visit the following links:

Fortunately, we may be getting our wish. As of this writing, permits were
in the final stages of approval for a Kentucky Fried Chicken to be
constructed on the northwestern corner of Jerusalem and Wantagh Avenues.
According to officials at Yum! Brands Incorporated (operators of KFC and
several other restaurants worldwide), construction is scheduled to begin
in February and should be completed by June. Based in Louisville,
Kentucky, Yum! Brands is the world's largest quick-serve restaurant
company with nearly 33,000 restaurants around the world in more than 100
countries and territories. |
