Each year, since 1956, Wantagh has been crowning a sophomore or junior High School student as Miss Wantagh. The Miss Wantagh pageant is not about beauty (at least not from the outside). Miss Wantagh is about a teen representative with a desire to better her community and be a voice of her peers, while meeting officials from various levels of government. High School sophomores and juniors, that are a resident of Wantagh can apply. Miss Wantagh applications are available, from mid May to mid June, at the main office of the Wantagh High School. (Applications are also accepted online during this time.) The ceremonial crowning of Miss Wantagh takes place at the Beech Street Elementary School immediately after the 4th of July parade. All the semi-finalists receive gifts from local merchants in appreciation of their enthusiasm and interest in the community. In addition, Miss Wantagh and the first runner-up receive cash awards. THE CREATION OF A MISS WANTAGH WEBSITE We are looking for photos and stories to expand the Miss Wantagh website. We would like to hear from those who have actively participated in the pageant as well as from residents who welcomed the Miss Wantagh runner-ups as they were chauffeured down Wantagh Avenue in the 4th of July parade. We welcome comments from friends and families. A page will also be dedicated to those that were Miss Wantagh contestants and runner-ups. These ladies’ achievements have been quite significant. While not everyone running is crowned Miss Wantagh, they are nonetheless all worthy of the title. To that end, they deserve their just due and we are actively seeking them out and their stories. How wonderful would it be to know where these ladies are today and what they are doing? To participate in this project, please send an email to MissWantagh@optimum.net – if regular mail is preferred, please contact Ella Stevens at 409-1645 for further instructions.
